Heritage, Folk Medicine and Kaviraji Treatment in BangladeshBangladesh and a significant part of South Asia possess a vibrant and thriving medical pluralism. Medical pluralism has been turned into an intrinsic feature of its medical system in historical and contempo-rary contexts (See, Rashid, 2017, Misra, 2010, Leslie, 1980, Banerji 1981; Sujatha 2003, Sujatha& Abraham, 2009). Multiple medical systems such as Biomedicine (the term used for allopathic medicine), Ayurvedic, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH), Naturopathy, Kaviraji and other folk traditions are widely practiced in this region for primary health-care. Traditional medical practices (TMPs) involving the use of different medicinal plants vary greatly from place to place, region to region and community to community, as they are influenced by factors such as economy, culture, religion, education, ethnicity and environment. The cultural phenomena of super natural belief also plays a significant role in building different perceptions among different rural and ethnic om-munities on various statuses and conditions of their health, as many of these people view their illness as possession by evil spirits. Visits to shrines or shamans (a person who acts as an intermediary between the natural and supernatural worlds, using magic to cure illness) for folk methods of healing, are still observed in many places. The Historical Context of the 2003 Convention and the Contemporary Regional and Global Significance of ICHIn reality, safeguarding ICH (or whatever term one uses)1 has been an important issue for the large majority of countries around the globe and their citizens long before the 2003 Convention was adopted. The ‘problem’ of ICH, therefore, was a lack of formal international recognition of this reality and a cultural heritage protection paradigm that prioritised monumental European cultural forms over local and indigenous ones and that, when it addressed traditional culture, it did so from a heavily researcher-oriented viewpoint. The experience of those countries that are Parties to the 2003 Convention shows clearly that ICH in all its various forms is a rich social and, often, economic and even political resource that provides a variety of possible routes towards sustainable models of development. This variety is determined by many social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental factors and is itself part of the invaluable diversity of this form of heritage.Year2012NationSouth Korea

"Regional Collaboration for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-East Asia: Overview, Tasks and Strategies"I’ve been asked to speak about regional collaboration for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in South-East Asia, but I will be focusing more on safeguarding as it relates to the 2003 Convention, particularly on processes for ratification, inventory making, and legislative measures that have or have not been taken. It is important to know that there is a broader sense in which safeguarding happens at its best when UNESCO is not needed by which I mean it is happening in the communities, and there is no need for international conventions, laws, and national measures. That is the ideal situation. Unfortunately, that is not the situation of the world today. That is why we have the 2003 Convention, and that is why these measures are being put into place. Regional Collaboration for ICH Safeguarding in the Asia-Pacific Context: Overview, Tasks, and Strategies in the Pacific RegionThis paper begins with illustrating the vulnerability and resilience of Pacific island countries (PICs) to put intangible cultural heritage (ICH) safeguarding in a broader context of sustainable development for the Pacific region. The paper first presents a summarised history of the Pacific World Heritage Programme and the progress of its implementation since the adoption of the World Heritage Convention in 1972. It then outlines the development of the Pacific ICH Programme since the preparatory phase of the ICH Convention, adopted in 2003, to the organisation of multi-stakeholder consultations in seven PICs in 2010 and 2011. The paper identifies two tasks: i) organisation of consultations on ICH safeguarding and ii) elaboration of a mid-term strategy for ICH safeguarding in the Pacific. As a conclusion, the paper presents a strategy to focus on the contribution of Pacific ICH to the achievements of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and other internationally agreed goals such as Education for All (EFA). The paper argues that this could be done by building upon on-going good practices and by strategically highlighting the central role of ICH in achieving\nsustainable development of communities.Year2011NationSouth Korea

According to an important document from our early royal archive collection, while in battle with Mongol invasion forces in the thirteenth century, one of Vietnam’s greatest military heroes, Commander Tran Quoc Tuan of the Tran emperor’s army, captured a noted Chinese musical luminary named Ly Nguyen Cat. Current Status and Safeguarding Measures of Oral Traditions and Epics in MongoliaCentral Asia is a region that has served as the centre of social and economic, in particular cultural interrelations of East and West. The nations of this region have a rich cultural heritage and ancient traditions like any nation in the world. The nations of Central Asia - Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan – make up a unified cultural space, defined by great grassland steppes and famous mountains, nomadic culture and common history, relics and traditions. Throughout this region we find petroglyphs, keregsur, steles, ruins and other monuments attesting to the mingling of peoples in the Central Asian steppe since prehistory. The territory of our own nation, Mongolia, has indeed been the centre several nomadic empires at various stages in history, established by different peoples of Central Asia sharing a similar cultural origin – Hunnu, Khitan, Turks, Uighurs, Kyrgyz and Mongols.Year2015NationSouth Korea

Its scope is utilitarian as well as spiritual, ethical as well as aesthetic. Through ICH, local participants realise a wide range of benefits—ranging from practical techniques to affirmations of individual identity and group solidarity. National cultural institutions that programmatically recognise this value develop policy both to help safeguard local ICH and to promote cultural diversity, an ethical and political principle that recognises the creativity, beauty, wisdom, and legitimacy of the variety of human cultures. 3.29. Developing Mobile Theater to Connect Communities in Sri LankaJanakaraliya, led by veteran theatre personality Parakrama Niriella, works across Sri Lanka with different ethnic groups. Janakaraliya is a cooperative member of International Theatre Institute of UNESCO. It is a\nbilingual collective of youths trained in all skills necessary for drama production, which moves from one location to another with their collapsible tent hall, performing plays to audiences, who otherwise have no access to such recreation.
