Guam 2016 Festival of the Pacific Arts
This entry features photographs of individuals who are displaying their unique crafts creations with dignity, pride, and skill. These craft creations feature wood carving, weaving, painting, and sea shell necklace making which are unique to the artists' cultural and artistic traditions. Craftsmen and craftswomen from Samoa, Chuuk, Easter Islands, New Caledonia, Australia, Tuvalu, Palau display their creative skills, vibrant energy, dignity, and pride of craftsmenship. Through these photographs taken at the Guam 2016 Festival of the Pacific Arts, I strived to capture the human spirit that is reflected in people’s faces as they created these unique craft creations through wood carving, weaving, and sea shell necklace making. I have a passion for learning about different cultures and their histories and I have traveled throughout Europe and Asia. I was born and grew up in Germany and I’ve lived and worked in the U.S., Germany, Japan, Korea, Alaska, Panama, and now Guam. I was very excited to be part of the volunteer Guam 2016 Festival of the Pacific Arts Documentary Photography team and found this to be an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Sea Gypsies
Sea Gypsies also known as Bajau Laut or Moken are semi-nomadic Austronesian people who live in the Maritime Southeast Asia. They usually live seaborne lifestyle, and use small wooden sailing vessels such as "perahu" or "leap-lepa". A peaceable people, today their maritime existence that recognises no national boundaries is endangered. Their semi-nomadic number have been diminished in recent years due to political and post-tsunami regulations. A few Sea Gypsies families however still sail across the turquoise water of the Southeast Asia Maritime in their "perahu" for 7 or 8 months of the year. For Sea Gypsies, the ocean is their entire universe!

Kyrgyz Daily Life
These photos show Kyrgyz culture and Kyrgyz life both traditional as modern. Kyrgyzs were nomads some centuries ago. Now we live in cities and villages but we don't lose our nomadic roots. Young people are in studying with interest how our ancestors lived. So we have a lot of festivals, meetings, concerts and other events in this direction. Tradidtional theme is very close to me. It has color, saturation, real life.

Festive Events in Mongolia
I was fortunate to chance upon the Tamagni nair (Тамагны найр) festival of the nomads. It is a festival to brand new horses and pray for their health. The nomads working together to catch a horse and praying for its health while branding it made me realize that it was an ancient wisdom to live harmoniously with the beasts most deeply related to their lives Many intangible cultural heritage exist around us, we sometimes find them difficult to understand. Some have been pushed out by mainstream culture, losing importance and fading from people's minds. However, still many cultures are being transmitted around the world we need to make efforts to respect each other and understand each others' cultures.
