Description | Tabekasere is traditional basket made from a local species of bamboo. It is an iconic heritage craft in Navatusila, a highland tribe on mainland Vitilevu, located about 4 - 6 hours away from Suva. |
---|---|
Social and cultural significance | The basket is socially significant in this tribe for it lends dignity to its women. It is culturally inappropriate for one to carry root crops etc from the field atop one's shoulders for it is said that one becomes a beast of burden. Hence, the cultural dignity of a person is maintained when the basket is slung and carried behind one's back when leaving and entering a village. |
Transmission method | The element is transmitted orally initially and then through observation, imitation and immersion for learners. Transmission still largely oral and informal amid a relaxed social environment. |
Community | Navatusila District, Nadroga Navosa Province Western Mainland Vitilevu |
