Fai Akar Talibole
Akar (sago) is a traditional Timorese food made from palm trees. Both akar and the wild bean “koto-tisi” are considered essential foods for the community during times of famine or long drought when food is scarce. Akar typically grows in plains or near the coast, while koto-tisi is found in mountains and forests. Therefore, many consider akar as an alternative food for communities in plains and coastal areas, and koto-tisi as an alternative for those living in the mountains. In the Tetun-terik community in Viqueque, pounding akar is a cultural event that brings people together to make sago, accompanied by traditional songs and dances. Tali-bole is a traditional dance accompanied by dadolin (chants) from the Terik language community, performed during sago-pounding events.
