Description Ashar is a form of mutual-help when the entire community comes together to perform a labor- and resource-intensive task such as building a house or a school, making felt carpets, cleaning canals, etc. Ashar helps to finish a large amount of work in a short time. For better efficiency, the roles are distributed among the participants based on their skills and capacities.
Social and cultural significance The unity of all community members has always been perceived by Kyrgyz people as the essential part of the livelihood. The ground rule was the obligatory mutual support. It provided certain protection and safety for the Kyrgyz society. Attributable to the ashar, a sense of collectivism was formed among the Kyrgyz people. The subjects of ashar assistance were mainly young families, widows, orphans, as well as those who suffered misfortune or illness. If the family was in dire need, then all the relatives and neighbours came to its aid. It should be noted that this form of assistance is practiced today in particular, especially in emergency and extremely difficult situations
Transmission method Traditional knowledge concerning the element was passed from the older experienced members of the community to the young people in a natural way through demonstration.
