Description The tradition of domestication of falcon, hawk and eagles, and train them to the hunting has transmitted in world countries from the ancient time until today. The tradition to hunt with eagles is widely practiced among Kazakh ethnic groups of Mongolia. The custom of hunting with eagles is not only the daily necessity of life, but a great contribution to the development of a sport, competitions and festivals. Hunters develop a strong relationship and spiritual bond with their birds, and strong commitment and care is required to train, handle and fly the eagles. Traditional equipments such as hood, bewit, jess (short strap around the leg of an eagle), gauntlet (gloves), immovable seat, fork supporter on a horse, feeding bag and cup are used for the falconry.
Social and cultural significance The ritual to hunt by eagle which is one of the main forms of Shuvuuchlakhui is still widely conducted and inherited among Kazakh nation with its original feature until today. In the Kazakh tradition, the eagle is considered as protector of the owner and symbolizes long life to the owner. Hunting with eagle contains all the contents of survival needs, traditional rituals, ceremonies and races. Bayan-Ulgii province has been organizing “Eagle festival” as a provincial event since 1999. The event has been greatly expanded today that the visitors from neighboring provinces, Ulaanbaatar city and all the corners of the world gather to watch the festival. In 2017, 18th “Eagle Festival” was held. In this event, total 120 eagle hunters from 13 soums of Bayan-Ulgii province participated. The Government of Mongolia has been supporting this tradition of Kazakh nation and The Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia selected “Eagle Festival” as a Best event in 2016. The festival has contributed greatly to the development of Bayan-Ulgii province’s tourism sector and subsequently, the incomes of SME producers who manufacture hand crafts, souvenirs and embroidery. Since 2007, The Eagle Festival is annually held in Ulaanbaatar city by the Governor’s Office of Ulaanbaatar city. Now, it has become the event that not only capital city residents, but also many local and foreign tourists’ wait with excitement.
Transmission method by participation in the hunting
Community “The Mongolian Federation of Falconry” is actively operating to promote this heritage which was in danger to be forgotten and discontinued to generations, elucidating the Shuvuulakhui sport and arts to public, recovering interrupted heritage and to relocate the hunter birds.
