Description The art of knifemaking is old and ancient, and because knives are made by hand, they are a sought-after product in all countries of the world. Among the most ancient forms of knives, Kazakh, kagyi, tolbargi, panvandli, koshkhovuz and several other types have come down to us. Today's types of these, such as horn sop, yorma sop, suqma sop, kalai sar, mis sarbasta, sadafli, chilmekha, suyaksop, sadafsop, have been formed. The side of the needle is mainly made of hardened steel and steel. Currently, there are about twenty knife-making centers in Uzbekistan, which differ from each other in their work technology, shape and decoration.
Social and cultural significance A knife is the most necessary item in an Uzbek home. Despite the huge selection of imported knives from various manufacturers and world brands, people in Uzbekistan prefer to use traditional Uzbek knives. The shape of the blade and the manufacturing technology of classic Uzbek knives (pichok) were formed at the end of the 14th - beginning of the 15th century and remain unchanged to this day. The Uzbek knife is easy to distinguish from others by its special shape. The blade usually has a raised tip of the knife, but there are also straight blades. The diameter of the knife handle is always less than the width of the blade, which gives the convenience of using the knife and a special beauty and harmony of shape. Knives can have a type-setting, solid-horn or wooden handle. The tip of the pen is always bent down. All knives have excellent balance. Small knives in Uzbekistan are called "chirchiks", and large ones (more than 14 cm) - "sharkhon". Knives are made in small blacksmith workshops, so each knife is individual. Specialists can distinguish by the knife which master made it. Usually each master put his mark on the blade. The knife is carried in a wide straight leather sheath. Traditionally, knife blades are made of carbon steel, most often dark with a bluish or yellow tint. Previously, for this, the blades were processed in a liquid solution of clay of a certain composition. Such knives are very quickly sharpened (or rather corrected) with several movements of one bowl or plate. Also, materials for modern knives are automobile springs, bearing cages, engine valves, fittings and other improvised materials. They also make “Damascus” steel knives in Uzbekistan. Knives in Uzbekistan are made in small towns of the Ferghana Valley - Shakhrikhan and Chust. There are also workshops in Tashkent and Bukhara.
Transmission method Today, the associations "Usto", "Hunarmand" are active in Uzbekistan and make a great contribution to the development of folk art, including the art of knife making. Also, the knife master is teaching the young generation to the craft of knife making based on the master-apprentice tradition.
