| Description | The first APHEN-ICH Capacity-Building Workshop on the Linking 2003 Convention and University ICH Programs was held in 2019 in Shanghai. Following the first APHEN-ICH Capacity-Building Workshop, ICHCAP holds second Workshop to develop ICH curriculum and implement it into the higher education institutes reflecting the global capacity-building strategy of UNESCO, and the spirit of 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage. As a part of the capacity building workshop, ICHCAP and UNESCO Bangkok Office are organizing a webinar session open to the public to raise professor and researchers’ interest in developing ICH related courses and curriculum. | ||

Strengthening Heritage Management Capacity in the Pacific Islands
All aspects of curriculum development at the University of the South Pacific requires intra-regional work especially within and across our 12 member countries. These are Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. This engagement includes both the needs assessment and endorsement of new courses and programmes. For the Professional Certificate, the UNESCO Pacific Heritage Hub Steering committee and UNESCO Apia Office were also instrumental in development. The programme design and proposed courses and structure were also presented at the 2016 and 2018 Council of Pacific Arts Meeting and the Pacific Culture Minister’s Meetings held in Guam and Fiji Respectively. We have not thus far leaned into inter-regional cooperation but are exploring the potential for this after the first roll out of the programme to determine what opportunities might exist for inter-regional cooperation and exchange. Inter-regional Field Experiences on Curriculum Development for ICH Safeguarding: Experience from Uganda
Since its inception in 2006, the Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda (CCFU) noted very limited professional heritage expertise in the culture sector. In Uganda, both private and public universities do not offer fully fledged degree courses and therefore those with professional qualifications in heritage were trained outside the country. Over the past 14 years, CCFU has carried out trainings for development partners and designed training manuals on heritage preservation and promotion, but soon realized this was not sufficient. In 2017 CCFU, in consultation with partner universities, applied for assistance from UNESCO’s ICH International Assistance Fund to design a degree course on ICH and Sustainable Development for universities in Uganda. As the coordinating organisation, CCFU ensured that representatives from four universities, the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Uganda National Commission for UNESCO, the Department of Culture and Family Affairs, as well as the National Council for Higher Education formed a Steering Committee and working groups that were responsible for designing the university course syllabus. Emily Drani talks about inter-regional field experiences on curriculum development in Uganda. MS. EMILY DRANI is the Executive Director and co-founder of the Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda, an organisation dedicated to promoting the value of ‘culture in development’ approach. She holds a Master of Philosophy in Development Studies with a focus on Endogenous Development.
