Kazakhstani photographer Dmitry Rugis’ journey to the sacred Aulietau mountain in Ulytau profoundly changed his life and career. Formerly a miner, Rugis turned to photography after a spiritual experience during a pilgrimage to the mountain, known as a historical and sacred site tied to ancient legends and Kazakh identity.
His work now focuses on capturing Kazakhstan’s intangible cultural heritage—its sacred landscapes, historical monuments, rituals, and everyday people. Through exhibitions, festivals, and collaborations with cultural institutions, Rugis preserves and promotes Ulytau’s legacy and national traditions for future generations. |
