Description | 타이스(Tais)라고 알려진 의식용 직물은 동티모르에서 여러 세대를 거치며 직조되어 왔다. 여성들은 조상들에게 결혼식과 같은 전통 의식에서 사용하기 위한 타이스 만드는 법을 배웠다. 미래 세대를 위해 이 지식을 전승하는 것이 중요하게 여겨졌기 때문에 이 기술은 수 세기 동안 어머니에서 딸로 전해져 왔다. 직조 전통은 가족의 유대를 강화하기 때문에 중요한 사회적 기능을 한다. 동티모르인에게 타이스는 지역 전통과 강력하게 연결되어 있으며, 타이스 직조 작업은 지역 관습일 뿐만 아니라 국가 정체성의 일부로 여겨진다. 타이스 제작을 위한 디자인과 기술은 동티모르의 문화, 구비설화, 인식, 역사 이야기에 얽혀있다. |

Dancing white handkerchief, Bidu Lensu Mutin and Tais, traditional textile
Bidu Lensu Mutin is a typical traditional dance from the community of the village of Suai Loro, Covalima Municipality. This dance is performed in cultural occasions such as welcoming guests, inauguration of sacred houses, “sau batar” (corn harvest festival), and “tara bandu”. The movement and every step of the dance is following-up by traditional arrangement of music. Using a kind of dry palm leaf to give the sound and rhythm, and traditional song with local dialect give harmonies to the dance. The dance have been passed from one generation to another and up to now it is still alive within the communities. --- Tais, Timor-Leste’s traditional textile, is a cultural heritage that has been passed from the ancestors, from generation to generation. Tais has an important role in Timorese people’s life, starting from their birth until death. They use Tais to welcome guests, as well as to show their cultural identity and social class. It is also used as an object of value, for example, 'barlake' (dowry) which is given from family of bride to family of groom. Tais is used not only as an element to tighten the relationship between families, but also to pay penalty when people did not follow the rule within the community. Tais is traditional clothes, which has men's style and women's style. In Timor-Leste, Tais has a variety of colors and motifs varying by ethnic groups. These days, cultural creative industry using Tais with respect to the tradition, is also growing. Tais is made from cotton and natural plants are used to dye color. Production of Tais has been mainly done by women, since the past until now. Normally, Tais is woven manually using simple equipment such as 'atis', 'kida', and others. Process of producing Tais is complex and takes long time. Traditionally, Tais has been woven by individuals. However, some family members also contribute to mitigate the work of women weavers, such as in process of preparing cotton, 'kesi futus' (tie-dye) and dying cotton. These days, weavers also began to form groups to facilitate their weaving activities.

The Tebe Lilin dance is a traditional dance, practiced in the ancient times, where the coexistence of society was very strict in the activities. Actually the dance still practicing and performing in the occasions of constructing sacred houses at the west part of the country, typically in Covalima Municipality. 동티모르 직조 전통(타이스) 보호 및 한국 사례를 통한 연구 : 무형문화유산 정책 시스템
산업화 및 세계화로 인해 전통 섬유 산업이 위태로워지고 무형문화유산 직조 전통이 감소하고 있다. 급속한 변화로 인해 사람들의 생활방식이 달라진 결과 전통 수공예 또한 점차 사라지고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 지역 지식을 보호하려면 정부는 무형유산정책 및 국제표준에 따른 법적체계 구현에 있어 중요한 역할을 해야 한다.

동티모르 문화 속 타이스 공예
동티모르 전통 직물 공예인 타이스(Tais)는 세대를 걸쳐 전승되어 왔다. 직조 전통은 가족의 유대를 강화하는 등 여러 주요한 사회적 역할을 해왔다. 직물 공예는 동티모르 문화와 전통지식에 대한 귀중한 표현으로서, 직물의 문양과 제조기술은 모계 혈통을 통해 전해져 오고 있다. 타이스는 동티모르의 문화와 전통지식, 패러다임, 역사를 반영하고 있다. 전통 직물은 티모르 여성이 다른 여성에게 존경을 표하기 위해 또는 참회의 뜻으로 건네 주는 관습이 있다. 옛날부터 티모르 여성은 타이스 직조법을 배웠다. 여성은 결혼을 하면 의례에 사용되는 타이스를 만들거나 물물교환 시장에서 이를 판매하기도 한다. 타이스는 티모르 아이들을 위해서도 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 이에 해당 지역 지식은 세대간 전승되어 왔다. 동티모르에서 어머니가 딸에게 직조 지식을 가르치는 것은 협동과 존경이라는 문화와 맥을 같이한다. 남녀노소 누구나 공동체 전체의 이익을 위한 문화적 관행을 공유하기 위해 함께 노력해 왔다. 타이스는 결혼으로 성사되는 두 가족 간의 의무적 유대 관계에서도 큰 의미를 가진다. 동티모르에서는 이러한 결합을 페토사(Feto-sa)와 우마네(Umane)라고 부른다. 또한 타이스는 장례식과 코레메탄(Kore-Metan: 사망 1주기를 기리는 의식) 등에서도 사용된다. 직물 염색과 짜기는 주로 여성들이 함께 수행하는 친밀한 사회적 과정이다. 마을에서 사회경제적으로 소외된 여성들이 함께 모여 일하며 공동의 목표를 성취한다. 이는 동티모르의 사회 구조를 반영한다. 동티모르인들은 친족관계, 의례, 영성, 직조와 관련된 가치와 믿음을 기반으로 유대와 공동체를 이뤘다. 직물 직조와 착용 및 활용은 티모르인의 정체성에 필수적 역할을 하며, 오랜 세월 티모르인들을 특징지어 왔다. 직조 기술 타이스 문양과 색상은 다양하다. 예를 들어, 동티모르 동부의 타이스는 목화를 이용하여 평직과 이카트(ikat) 기법으로 직조한다. 이카트는 직물에 문양을 넣기 위한 염색 기법으로, 실을 방염한 후 염색과 직조를 거치는 방법이다. 실다발을 원하는 문양에 따라 단단히 묶어서 방염하는 방식이다(이카트는 인도네시아어로 ‘묶다’는 뜻이다). 좁고 긴 천을 완성하는 데는 수개월 또는 수년이 걸린다. 염색을 위해서는 주로 커다란 절구를 사용하여 잎과 나무껍질을 빻아서 천연 염료를 만든다. 한편, 동티모르 서부에서는 지난 4년간 므나이사(mnaisa)라고 부르는 태피스트리(tapestry) 기법으로 천연 염료를 이용한 작은 벨트를 제조해왔다. 전통적으로 결혼식, 장례식 등 옷을 입는 경우에 따라 직물의 색상이 달라진다. 여전히 마을 방직공들은 고유식물을 이용해 손으로 뽑은 면사를 염색하고 있다. 하지만 염색 원료가 부족해지고 폴리에스테르 섬유와 합성 염료가 점차 일반화되면서 타이스 제조법도 변화하고 있다. 세계화와 동티모르 분쟁은 타이스 직조 전통의 급격한 쇠락을 가져왔다. 직조 과정에 대한 젊은이들의 참여가 부족하고 국가 우선 사업순위로서 무형유산에 대한 정부의 지원과 사회적 인식도 부족한 상황이어서, 보호 조치의 이행이 과제로 남아 있다. 사진 1 : 타이즈 공예 Ⓒ www.i0.wp.com/thekindcraft.com 사진 2 : 티모르의 타이즈 공예 Ⓒ 아브라오 멘돈사
